Earthquake ActivityA lot of people think there are only a few earthquakes a year. In reality, there are thousands. Many are imperceptible to humans, but are only read with a seismograph. When a lot of smaller quakes happen in a tight geographical area, seismologists call it swarming. The swarming will often indicate a larger magnitude earthquake coming. To date, seismologists have found swarming underneath Lake Tahoe and also at Yellowstone and other familiar hotbeds. One of the best places to get recent activity information is from http://www.usgs.gov They have very recent and historical data of earthquakes. In addition, they make hazard maps and more. This site shows the magnitude and the number of earthquakes of each magnitude. http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/magnitude.html
