Interesting Facts About Earthquakes1- Earthquakes do not last very long. Many of the largest earthquakes only lasted around twenty seconds and the largest around five minutes. In most cases, the earthquake lasts much less time. 2- A foreshock can predict a main shock about 50% of the time. 3- Many earthquakes are along the continent edges because that is where the tectonic plates lie. 4- The giant Sunami, on December 27, 2004, that hit the coast of Sri Lanka, is considered by many to be the largest earthquake ever. It had a magnitude of 8.9 and created a wall of water that was 40 feet high. Over 6,300 people were feared dead (src: Sina English). They can sense the seismic waves before people can. 7- A way to predict earthquakes is to look for an increased number of missing dogs or cats. 8- So far, seismologists haven't been able to predict when an earthquake will occur. 9- Earthquakes often strike in the same place more than once. Hotbeds of activity tend to remain active for long periods of time. 10- An earthquake can create a volcano or a new land mass.
