Northridge Earthquake

On January 17, 1994 the greater Los Angeles area was struck by a 6.7 magnitude blind thrust earthquake (src: Southern California Earthquake Center).

The quake caused a very intense wave upon the mantle. Many buildings and roads were destroyed. The cost to repair the infrastructure was over 20 billion. There were over 9000 injuries and 72 deaths attributed to the quake (src: berkely.edu).

Much research has come about from this disaster. Seismologists are intent on trying to predict the next disaster. Due to the high cost of the repairs, many people researched how to build structures more able to withstand earthquakes. New roads and buildings were integrated with earthquake defense building techniques. Some of the more popular techniques learned were base isolation and energy dissipation.

The Northridge Earthquake caused so much damage that insurance companies stopped offering earthquake insurance. To remedy this, The State of California created a private insurance company that would have federal oversight and provide a minimal amount of earthquake insurance to residents (src: wikipedia).
