USGS Earthquakes

USGS stands for the United States Geological Survey. The government loves to use acronyms and the USGS is no exception.

The purpose of the USGS is to predict earthquakes. Yes, it is next to impossible to predict earthquakes, but you still must try because it has the potential to save many lives.

The USGS performs research and monitors earthquakes throughout the world. If you love seismology, you can download some free programs and begin modeling your predictions in 3d.

They also produce hazard maps that show areas that are going to be hit the hardest. Construction projects can more accurately be assessed and billions of dollars can be saved. In addition, scenario maps help to assess potential impact cost. The maps are good at showing what will happen, where it will happen, but not when it will happen.
